I'm a Pol-Sci/History double-major, and you people need a dictionary.

I go with "the process through which society makes its governing decisions."

Politics has to do with the allocation of resources in the public realm. Resources can be physical (like cash), or social (like decision-making power). All politics is also public (thought not everything that is public is politics). The decision on what to have for dinner is not public and hence not political.

Classic political science definition: politics is the authoratative allocation of values.

Politics is getting what you want, influencing others, and deciding what the group is going to do.

In simplest terms: Politics is power. Who has it, who uses it, and who obeys it.

Any other definition is smoke.

---Response to additional information: I've glanced at your other questions/answers. For you to question anyone's intelligence - I mean anyone's - is ludicrous. You should pay a surtax for burdening society with your notions. I can only hope your idiocy here is due to anonymity, and that you pretend to be human when attending your political science classes.

Rotten speller, too. Or did you just decide to "compermise" the English language?

Politics does not pertain only to government. It applies to many, many different kinds of relationships.

"politics" is almost the same as "religion" to me. it is a tool that we've discovered that we use to build our civilizations.

politics is where we all get together and chatter at each other about how things run, in the faith that somehow they will improve through our efforts. i say this because that is what i see. at least we can see the politicians ;)

The pursuit of power for the sake of changing the existing rules.

The art of being polite -- aka lying for a purpose.

Politics is (are?) how people get along in a society, jockeying for social position and status, and tell each other what they want to hear to get what they want.

Whether allying with people who hold power, or building coalitions to gain or maintain power, the goal of the process is to get what you want, usually through social manipulation.

{EDIT} You asked for a personal definition, not what a dictionary says.

To me politics is very similar to opposing sports teams, Each side will rarely concede defeat and will do WHATEVER it takes to claim victory.
