In "Brokeback Mountain," why was Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) murdered? Is there anyway to find out the story behind his murder, such as who did it, why, and if his wife was involved?

It's purposely left unanswered. You're not even sure that he was murdered, this is an assumption on Ennis (Ledger)'s part. It not explicit because the intricacies of how and why he died isn't supposed to matter - Ennis knows in his heart what can happen if others found out about their affair, and he is both suspicious and afraid of it.

He was found out to be gay. His wife knew the reason, but was too ashamed to tell anyone. So she made up a story as to how he was murdered so no one else would know.

I think she knew the truth (which I'd say it was what Ennis was imagining) but it was easier for her to say he was killed the way she told Ennis.
Freakin sad :(

No way to find out. My guess is someone killed him because he was gay. So sad. Good movie.

i think his wife eventually found out about his sexual desires. she probably hired some men to kill him to cover up the secret. or maybe her father did the hiring. protecting her image i guess.
