More importantly, why are you engaged to a criminal? He probably just wants to get out of the US because of his record, and still all your money.
The guy sounds like a real loser.

Your partner can apply for an Australian fiance visa however he will need to pass the character check for the application to be successful. The key factors are general and criminal conduct. If he has been sentenced to 12 months or more prison time this will be a big problem. You should consult a registered migration agent before you apply who can advise you in more detail.

I actually don't think it is possible if it's in the last 10 years, but don't quote me on that. On that Border Patrol show I've seen them turn people away for having criminal convictions and that was just for a tourist visa, not immigration.
Make sure you find out before he comes, there is nothing more embarrassing than being deported!!!!

When Immigration process your Visas they have many requirements, one of which is a character requirement. Refer to the web address below for all the details. Personally I dont think his charges have been too serious and as long as he is honest to immigration about them then you shouldn't have a problem mirgrating here. Goodluck.

I don't see why not...
Not too long ago, the ONLY non-indigenous people in Australia were criminals and their wardens.
