Reduce the amount of light. If the tank gets a lot of sunlight, more algae will grow. If the back of the tank is to a window, use one of those wall paper backgrounds, for example.

you can never keep it from growing...but there are several things that can be done to help slow it down.

You can try the chemical treatments, which are harsh on the fish and cause them stress. The chemicals do work fairly well but you have to continuously use them month after month.

You can buy an "algae eater" or two, depending on the size of your tank. They are small (about 2" - 4") sucker fish that feed off the algae that grows in the tank. A good balance is to have one for every 10 gallons of water, if they are fairly decent size, 3" or bigger. You can buy these fish at any pet store that sells fish.

You can thoroughly clean the tank every week. This would keep the algae from growing, but it would also stop the natural cycle of the tank and that would cause the chemical levels of the tank to be off for a while until the natural process starts again.

There is no way to keep some level of algae from growing in the fish tank. There are many variables which may affect the amount of growth you are experiencing. Are you regularly cleaning off the decorations / plants (plastic or silk) and the glass. It should not be such a problem that you cannot see inside the glass, or it has clogged the filter or all decorations are brown / green. What type of pump / filter are you using, what type of fish are in tank, are you monitoring the ph / ammonia, and temperature? Do you wipe down the glass weekly and clean the gravel on the bottom?

It all depends on the size of the tank and what type of algea. If you can grow natural plants in your tank with proper lighting and nutrients, and stockifish that eat algae and avoid direct sunlight, you will have a much better chance of keeping the algae under controll.

A 1 oz bottle of "alge destroyer advanced" can be bought at pet stores for under $3. 2 - 3 drops and 15 minutes later and your tank will be clear.

get a pacosamus (sucker fish) and keep the ph level where it is supposed to be. A good filter system helps.
