My Sony Vaio is only over 6 months old- I bought it in February 2006.. but for the past month or so, after 12 hours of it being on, everything freezes up and I have to restart it. Could it be because of a virus, or is something wrong with the PC itself? :( Help.. it's really annoying to have to restart my computer twice a day.

(Please only answer if you're serious, not just to get 2 points and move along with your day.. that's lame.)

Viruses and/or spyware will make your computer act strange, and overheating will make it hang or restart also. Update and run your antivirus software. If it still freezes up, see a technician. Is it still under warrantee?

I have a laptop also. You have to remember the fans in a laptop are very small. If you are not using it the full 12 hours, you should check the sleep mode. I have mine set so it will "sleep" after there has been no activity for 20 minutes. When you come back, just press the start button and it's up and running in about 1-3 seconds, the amount of time it takes you to sit down and get comfortable.

If you use it a lot and are on the Internet, you may need to use Ad-Aware and Spy bot to rid your computer of unwanted cookies and spy ware. You may want to delete your temporary Internet files also. If you are constantly using it you may need a defrag, too. Get all the files together so the computer doesn't need to go all over the disc looking for all the information. If your laptop has been severely bumped or knocked about, you may have some physically bad sectors on the hard drive. Most computers do. A defrag is especially important then.

I hope some of this helps, good luck.

Well there could be several causes. The most likely causes are:

1. Fragmentation: Run disk defragmentor. click start-programs-accesories-system tools- DiskDefragmentor. This will clean up your hard drive and improve performance

2. Viruses: go to www.avast.com and download the free Avast! Antivirus and do a full scan. It is free and far more effective than McAfee or Norton while being less of a drain on your system.

3. Spyware: Go to www.lavasoft.com and download the free Ad-Aware SE Personal edition. Run that to clean spyware out of your machine. You can also get Spybot Search and Destroy at www.download.com

Your computer is only six months old so I seriously doubt you have so much dust in there that it would affect your system's performance. It's also highly unlikely that your computer is overheating unless one of the fans are failing or you have blocked vents.

Running a computer for 12 hours won't make it any hotter than running it for one hour. The computer gets hot based on how hard it's working. 3D games or tasks like encoding DVDs will heat up a computer because they force the processor and graphics card to do alot of work.

You should first of all check for viruses using Norton or some other virus program, even if your sure that you don`t have a virus.

Then, delete any files you don`t need OR move them to a memory stick.

(A SIMPLE TRICK: TRY MOVING SOME FILES OR SOFTWARE FROM THE C:/ DRIVE TO THE D:/ DRIVE.)

(RECOMMENDED ONLY IF IT'S A DESKTOP COMPUTER)

Could also be that your Windows is reaching the end of it's life. If thats the case you should track down a reinstallation disk and your CD key and reinstall Windows.

While there could be viruses(always safe to check) it's probably overheating rather then security

If it has been running for 12 hours it could be getting hot. You might need to have a heat sink put in. Maybe if you clean off the air vent that would help. Sometimes it gets covered with dust and lint. That would effect the airflow, and cause it to heat up.
