It has been part of the culture for a lot longer than most societies have been around. All countries have their caste systems, some are just more obvious than others. There is no such thing as true equality. We are all different, and depending on circumstance, genetics, or culture, we are all on different levels.

In most Indian cities today the number of cross- cultural (inter-caste) marriages are only increasing rapidly.
Where do u actually come across caste based classification -Does the priest in the temple ask you which caste you belong to when you go to pray? NO. Does it stop you from going to the library, the health club or the grocery store or medical shop ? No. Is there anything that a person from a different caste can do that others cannot - No.
So, the only places it affects you is, in ALL academic forms and ALL Government forms. Clearly it is a political gimmick to divide and rule. People are so passionate about things like caste, religion, etc - that they will vote based on their emotions and rarely by using their common sense. So the caste system is the easiest fire for the politicians to kindle and let elections take an emotional wave instead of a sensible voting.
Is it necessary for the day-day life of a common man - No. does that mean politicians will do away with their single most effective election tool - Never.

The caste system is directly tied to Hinduism, perhaps the oldest religion in the world along with Judaism. Asking this to change is asking for people's belief systems to change. Please note the very eurocentric perspective you are taking here. Few devout Hindus through history have really had a big problem with it (True--Gandhi and others fought for the rights of the untouchable class) partly because of their beliefs in karma and reincarnation--the place you are in life was deserved by your choices before. This makes the whole system seem a lot more fair from that perspective.
Regardless, the caste system is in decline in India in the public sphere as India has built into its laws basic freedoms for all. Within the culture, the stigma is still strong, especially among certain sects of Hinduism and in rural areas.
"We have just one life"...that IS exactly the point of contention that causes the difference of opinion.

You are absolutely right.. Caste system in not necessary for India ...but 'who will tie bell on to the cat's neck ' is the biggest question. As far as the nasty politicians greed for power and wealt, they will not allow the dirty system to go away..and unfortunately our country is in their hand..you and I cant do any thing in this matter..
However one possibility is still there ..all the like minded people should unite and fight for the cause and make understand the people the drawback in caste system and superstition belief...
Assuming if we two have mentally prepared to fight against the caste system..what about the rest 99, 99, 999..????? Will they ???

I personally think the caste system is unjust and stupid. However, it is part of the Hindu religion and people have a right to follow their own beliefs, even if I, as a nonHindu disagree with them.
Every society has people it discriminates against. This is awful, but it's a fact of life. The question to me is 'when will we, as a species, grow up and quit being a bunch of bullies, whether on an individual, societal, national or international level?'

Yeah, the caste system is REALLY messed up, but they think that you "deserve" to be born in whatever caste you are in, so they don't feel guilt or remorse for the untouchables, or anything. Well, what can you expect from a group of people who would treat a cow better than their fellow man?!

Cast system is such a stupid thing. it is really a disgusting thing, i hate it. We have only one life & we must enjoy every moment of it; that's my policy. but what 2 do? we alone can't change the custome & practices of a big country like India where numerous people reside. the root cause this problem is the lack of education. people r just blindly believeing in whatever they r seeing/hearing. they just r not being logical/practical. they r not thinking things in a much scientific manner. i can understand ur feelings. but as Indians, we r meant 2 see all these stupidities scilently(sobs!!!).

You have a good point. The Indian caste system pretty much sucks. I think more educated and enlightened folks in India reject it -- just the more backward folks still embrace it.
