Don't listen to those guys. Potassium depletion is only one of many basic nutrients that the body loses as a result of prolonged diarrhea. The most noticeable of them are C, B, and good ol' H2O.

H20, Sodium and Potassium travel together. The more fluid you pass out of your body, the more sodium and potassium you lose. Now, keep this in mind, every body is different. Some people will HOLD on to potassium even with severe diarrhea or on diuretics, because their body thinks it better keep it. Other people will throw out potassium right and left. This is why it is so important to get potassium levels for those who have had a ton of water loss. With diarrhea, you need an electrolite replacement, such as Pedialyte, to replace sodium and potassium. Without sodium you body would not retain water, and without potassium your muscles would fail.

Your electrolytes always go out of balance when you lose fluids at a rapid loss whether it is diarrhea or vomiting or profuse sweating.
