I know for a fact that the Dylan came from the name of a Welsh poet that Bob Dylan admired. His name was Dylan Thomas and his best known poem is, "Do not Go Gently into that Good Night", a poem about death. Thomas was an alcoholic and died at a young age.

He was going to call himself Robert Allyn or Robert Allen. He discovered that their was already a famous saxophone player named David Allen...he liked the sound of the "D" because it was stronger.....therefore he created the name Dylan. And at that time there were a lot of famous Bobs in popular music....he decided to go with Bob. There you have it......Robert Zimmerman to Bob Dylan.
