I know for a fact that the Dylan came from the name of a Welsh poet that Bob Dylan admired. His name was Dylan Thomas and his best known poem is, "Do not Go Gently into that Good Night", a poem about death. Thomas was an alcoholic and died at a young age.

His first name is really Robert. Dylan from Dylan Thomas the poet.

He was going to call himself Robert Allyn or Robert Allen. He discovered that their was already a famous saxophone player named David Allen...he liked the sound of the "D" because it was stronger.....therefore he created the name Dylan. And at that time there were a lot of famous Bobs in popular music....he decided to go with Bob. There you have it......Robert Zimmerman to Bob Dylan.
