Good songwriting transcends genre. There are metal bands who have recorded excellent cover versions of "pop" songs, for instance.
Where pop loses out to metal is that the actual sound tends to date very quickly. Pop is not intended to last, and usually a product of its immediate time and place. Pop is also by its very nature made up of music that sounds very much like all the other pop music that surrounds it--the goal is acceptance and conformity, not innovation or challenge. Therefore it has a very short shelf life. It is intended to be disposable, which means unless it becomes some kind of phenomenom (Prince, for instance) then no-one's gonna remember it six months after it is released.

Metal is kick butt, but pop is cool. Metal will evolve, and pop will come back. Pop will always there. "Pop" really means whatever is popular for that period of time.

I don't think music should be a contest, there is something for everyone, thank goodness because I would drive a railroad spike through my forehead if i had to listen to country....
