Why do you think that is (illegal or not)?

If you’re going to reply with “this is a stupid question,” then don’t answer. I will report you

*More to the point: This is if you do NOT succeed in killing yourself, have you then committed an illegal act?

It's not illegal in the state of Alabama. In fact, though attempted suicide is illegal many places, it's not illegal here. Attempted suicide will, however, possibly get you committed to a 72-hour mental evaluation to determine if you are a further danger to yourself. That will generally lead to a longer involuntary committment if they feel you may hurt yourself again or someone else.

I think it's better that way. Is jail really the place you want to send someone who is already depressed and suicidal? Or should you try to get them some type of mental help, which they won't get behind bars?

Of course, if you're making a public scene of things, like does happen once in a while, you can be charged with Disorderly Conduct, if there is nothing else that they can do at the time to get you off the street.

To assist someone in suicide can be illegal. Some states list attempted suicided as a felony, but provide no punishment. You're more likely to get sent to the mental ward at the hospital and held until they believe you are no longer a danger to yourself or others. Either that or you could end up in a nut house till you straighten up.

It may vary by state, but generally it is not "illegal" however it is illegal to assist anyone doing so . In addition anyone attempting to commit suicide is automatically deemed an immediate danger to themselves(obviously) and subject to confinement for the purposes of a psychiatric evaluation.

Attempting suicide is; and this would be covered by state laws not federal. I think it's more to give the government power to force medical attention. Say someone is really depressed and tries to kill themselves; if the person has done nothing wrong then a judge can't really make them seek treatment.

and yes, I am assuming that if someone attempts suicide then they aren't in a position to decline medical treatment. This is another debate.

Yes, in most states. But generally unenforceable.

The main reason to make it illegal is to justify making attempted suicide and assisted suicide also illegal.

I don't know, it's supposed to be illegal, but my sister tried to kill herself and she didn't get arrested. She went to the hospital and when they released her she went home and succeeded in killing herself. Hey, if she'd been arrested she'd likely be alive today. I don't know why my parents didn't sue them all? Hospital, doctors, and police.

You will not get arrested for successfully committing suicide.

yes technically speaking it is illegal. obviously this only applies to people who fail to actually kill themselves. i know people who have failed to kill themselves. they weren't arrested per se, but they did go to court and were fined if i'm not mistaken.

Seems kind of a moot point if it were since they cannot prosecute a dead person.

What difference would it make? You'd be dead anyway. Go ahead and report it if you want. I don't care.
