This question is valid for both personal and broader (national/political) viewpoints. Specifically I'm asking this because I'm in financial trouble, and a cashier made a stupid mistake resulting in a $30 return in my favor. I would have normally corrected him, but as I said, I'm in a financial tight spot. Is this justified, or have I compromised my morals.

(this could be expanded to the whole "wiretap/terrorist" issue also.

Well, once my father was over paid. He tried to tell the cashier, but was treated like slime. So he kept it. I still think that even by today's standards honesty is best (in your situation)

I find that some among my nationality find it's fine to shoplift, considering what's been stolen from us (the land). I think it's an excuse, and wouldn't want to jeapordize my spiritual and mental health. Besides, it's mostly those with little or no spiritual upbringing that feel that way.

In cases you are justified in doing what you must to survive. But if its only adding to the moral and spiritual decay...

Well.... nuff said.

peace

You feel you have compromised your morals or you would not be asking the question. I am presently dealing with those questions myself. I live in the Philippines. I came here to help establish programs to assist male/female prostitutes in finding a different vocation. Shortly after arriving I discovered that the problem I face here are similar to that co-workers in the U.S.A. face. In the U.S.A. how do you tell a kid to stop selling drugs and get a job at Mac Donalds for minimum wage or a stripper to stop danicing at clubs and take a minimum wage job. In the Philippines how do we pursuade a prostitute it is better to get a legitmate job than prostitute themselves when they sometimes can make more money turning one foreign trick than they can make in a month at a legitimate job. I began to question myself about what I would do in a similar situation. Shortly after coming here I contacted Tuburculosis. I was looking out the hospital room window one day and watched as a young good looking man swept the street curbs in the hot sun. It would have been easy for him to turn foreign tricks, but he had elected to travel the more moral road. I realized then it really is all about choices. This young man has made the consious choice not to compromise himself. Once we compromise ourselves it becomes easier to do it the next time. I have always found it easy to find lots of excuses to compromise myself. I have heard the true character of a person is determined by the decisions he/she makes when they know no one is watching.

Wow, good question. But I'd have to say it depends on the degree of things, you getting an extra $30 is nothing to be ashamed of if you're money is tight. You are an individual and it will help you more than whatever store you bought from.

Government is different because when governments compromise their society's morals, people tend to get angry enough to shed blood and create a revoultion. When governments lower morals, it tends to bite back a lot harder.

You compromised your morals. That cashier could get fired because of the mistake. Think how much better you would have felt to give it back and then you wouldn't need to ask this questions of others because you feel guilty or need to justify what you did.

no its not justified, it was wrong, but being in your position, i would have done the same thing. its not your fault the cashier cant count.. it must be weighing heavy on your mind if your thinking broader viewpoints. im sure no one is going to suffer much over 30 bucks. you didnt compromise your morals, you just took a detour. im sure somewhere down the road, youll make up for it.

I think that you should return the money. The cashier could be accused of stealing that money and/or be terminated. What happens if that is how they support their family and now that is on a criminal record somewhere? (It can happen). I am not sure about you, but my soul is not for sale for $30. Please report the error and return the money. It is the only thing to do.

there is not any objective morals with out God. with out God why is burning toddlers undesirable? actual e mail me why identity decide to appreciate. I even have by no ability made the "it glaring" argument there are different the clarification why it could possibly be God. So ur "its glaring" rebuttal doesnt persist with to me because of the fact the. purely logically sound clarification for OM is God. yet thats the secondary reason the extensive-unfold one is cuz God reported so, He cant lie.
