Scientists changed the definition of planet, so Pluto (the former planet) is no longer a planet. Instead, it is recognized as an asteroid.

There's a really long definition of why and stuff, but this is the easy version =]

a group of scientists got together and decided on some new rules for what it takes to be a planet and decided that pluto isnt it. apparently however, the definition they came up with would also exclude earth from being a planet... read the article below. pluto is still there, and the same as it has been, but humans are trying to make new rules about the universe (like it makes any difference).

Pluto is not gone. There is a debate as to whether Pluto should be called a planet or not, because Pluto is smaller than some asteroids.

I don't know about the buttons tha you see. Pluto the (former) planet was demoted recently due to its small size (it is now a dwarf planet) and because it "strays" in through Neptune's orbit at times. It was demoted because there are probably hundreds of small objects floating around out there, and we do not want to call each of them a new planet-!! People are upset about it because - since they were school children - they memorized the fact that there were nine planets, not eight, and they memorized Pluto as being the last, farthest out one.

Pluto is still there, of course, but the International Astronomical Union decided that it should not be called a planet because it is too small. The new official term is "dwarf planet".

A few weeks back, the scientific community re-classified what is to be considered a planet. And with the new definition they agreed on, pluto is no longer considered a planet.

Recently, the International Astronomical Union voted to redefine the term "planet", demoting Pluto to the status of a "dwarf planet", leaving the solar system with eight planets.
