Now I know all members of the parties fall into this category so if you take offense to my remarks, this question targets you.
Neither political party is doing any good for this country. They were meant for like minded citizens to group together and vote for someone who was in line with their views. They were not meant for politicans to use for their own personal gain. This split we have in our country is the fault of the party leaders who only have the parties views in mind and not the views of the people who support it. They are not agreeing on anything and our indecisiveness is being mocked by the entire world. They need to put differences aside until the current issues that are so important right now are resolved. They will not do this as they do not want what is best for us but what is best for the party. Politicans are using the party for personal gain and we are being taken advantage of as it is not allowing anyone else into office. We do not have a real choice. Please comment.

By the way, I have nothing against people who follow political parties and keep an open mind. My problem is with the scum who use the party, and the people who support it for their own gain and not the gain of the people.

Coundn't the government itself sponsor each qualified candidate itself by controlling the debates and the airing of them? This would allow more diversity in our elections and all the people could hear proposals from each candidate, not just the ones who can afford to be on T.V. The government could air and sponsor debates between the candidates and we could truly see which one will represent us the best. Now with how elections are set up, candidates would have to get some sort of sponsor to give them money in order to advertise themselves thereby becoming a slave to that sponsor. This is why, I feel, our leaders cannot represent the people nowadays. They are slaves to their sponsors and their own greed and have the parties ideals, and their own on the agenda and not the wishes of the people. The government should set up the debates between each candidate from each party and have sole control over broadcasting it. Does anyone think this could work?

Political parties are probably the worse political decision in the history of this country. They have caused far much more harm than good, and have had a huge divisive effect on the country as a whole.
I keep wondering, why can't candidates just run on their own, stating what they stood for, and having their constituents vote. No primaries, no districts, just people voting for the candidate they want, and proportional representation across the state.

You betchya! It's not just the party leaders, it's the media, the lobbyists, the mindless idiots who vote as they are told to vote, the unions, the entitlements crowd and a hundred other groups with an agenda.
We absolutely need to break the stranglehold the two parties have on this country, nothing is getting done and some very not good things are looming on the horizon.

Yes. Definately. Indeed. If we lived in medieval times, we'd say that our leaders have lost the mandate of heaven. What we need now is something to inject fear into the politicians of both parties, perhaps by creating a third party. However, I dont' see that hapening in anyones lifetime. Personally, I'd like to see a McCain-Leiberman third party ticket because they seem to have more centerist views that aim at the true problems in the nation and would do more than sling stupid slogans at the dilemas we face today.

It's a flawed system, but there is no system that isn't. The problem is that both parties have gone too far (liberals too left, conservatives too right). They both need to come back towards the middle, because that is where most Americans are. I agree that most politicians, in both parties, are out for their own personal gain. But, there is no way to fix it. Average Americans can't run for office, because we're too busy working. So, it's left up to the upper crust elitists who have no idea what it's like to be a working American.

POLITICS is all about Keeping the upper hand over your opponents and decieving others(when I use the word "decieving" it actually means, manipulation of words by a politician that results in deception to others..)
And its needless to say that political parties are destroying one country(america)...my view is that politics is destroying the whole world...And I have reasons to prove it...Apart from domestic events of a particular country whatever is happening nowadays on the INTERNATIONAL SCENARIO(e.g'wars, relations with different countries, etc) is more POLITICALLY MOTIVATED than anyother thing...
I guess things should be more for the RIGHT CAUSE or NATIONAL INTEREST than to become the PRESIDANT...

I don't have as much of an issue with the majority parties as I do with the right wing conservative radio talk show hosts and the left wing liberal talk show hosts who have no problem bashing the opposition (even when they look incredibly stupid doing it because they happen to be wrong on a particular issue) when they they defend their own leader (even when they look incredibly stupid doing it because they happen to be wrong on a particular issue).
I also hate it when people use the terms "conservative" or "liberal" as if it is a derogetory statement.
These idiots are more destructive than the parties themselves.

In my humble opinon,At the higher levels of govt, the political parties are on the same side with the agenda to bring the USA down to a third world country so it will fit more easily into their New World Order.

Depends. The major parties are trying to destroy America with the open borders, egocentrism and corruption. I almost forgot to say that they're in charge of gerrymandering districts so they can be favored. But the third parties really leave a big question mark. Reason? The duopoly.

Yes, because they don't allow a real debate of what is good for America to develop b/c they have to remain within the confines of their party platforms, this discourages free thinking and creative approaches to problems which NEED to be solved.
Plus, it polarizes the populace dramatically, so we are constantly divided and no real change can occur.
United we stand, divided we fall!

In the case you present, it isn't the parties but the people who are a part of them, most notably those who act in extreme manners. Also, you're putting people in black and white- "They are not agreeing on anything..."- as one party of another (by the way, "the party" usually carries somewhat Communist/Bolshevik implications).
Oh, yes, and George Washington was opposed to political parties. Then again, America was pretty small in the 1790's...
