Contrary to what "the penquins" said, it is NOT for off-roading. It is for highway driving (cruising) where you are maintaining a fairly constant speed.

You car runs in this higher gear and saves on the amount of gasoline it is using by doing so. The trade-off is that you do not have as much power as you would in a lower gear. For example, if you have it in overdrive, you might notice a hesitation or sluggishness when trying to accelerate to pass another vehicle.

Using it in the city could help fuel economy, but the amount of use in the city would be so minimal that I doubt you could notice it.

OD is meant for lowering engine RPMs therefore conserving fuel. OD only engages at a certain speed. It is just another gear with one exception, it locks your torque converter (also saving fuel). OD usually gets the sets the ratio of the transmission to 1:0.80 or so to get the ratio higher than that of the engine. This reduces power but increases economy. OD does not hurt the fuel economy in the city. The only thing is on hilly terrain where the transmission is shifting back and forth, in and out of overdrive, this wears the transmission out and overheats it.

Overdrive is the output shaft of the transmission turning faster that the input shaft. 1 to 1 is a typical final drive ratio. If it is over driven it would be .7 to 1 (fairly typical). This slows engine speed and does help fuel economy as long as the engine has enough power to maintain it's speed. That's why it downshifts to climb hills.

the difference is the rate at which the rear wheels will turn
in relation to engine speed. This is known as final drive ratio. In OD, the rear wheels turn slightly faster for the same engine RPM as in Drive. There are a few ways that this is done - an extra gear, a lock-up torque converter, etc. Depending on the set-up of the drive train, OD may also lower your towing/hauling capacity,

Over drive is for the highway and will use extra gas in the city it would be completely unnecessary. It is for more power when passing cars on the interstate for example. It gives you an extra power performance went needed and you see you would never need that in the city. It for when you need to get around another vehicle quickly.

a gear selection in the transmission of a vehicle which makes the drive shaft faster than the engine in r. p. m.'s(rotations per minute)
it calms the engine down at higher speeds. thus saving wear and tear and fuel.
check out how the manufactureer of your car suggests you utilize your overdrive.generally speaking overdrive is for highway application

overdrive is a higher gear for fuel economy on highways. if youre car is an automatic transmision you dont have to wory about the overdrive, youre tranny does the thinking for you. if its a standard tranny you dont want to us youre high gaer. if you use overdrive or fifth gear in the city then youre wasting fuel. be couse the engine is pulling harder at low speeds in the higher gears.more than likely you have an automatic transmision and dont have to worry about it,just put it in overdrive and go.

on my honda crv, the option to turn off overdrive stops the car from switching into 4th gear, which is more fuel efficient because switch back and forth between 3rd and 4th gear waste's gas... somehow. So turn it off in the city, and on when on highways

Over-drive is a gear reduction that allows your car's engine to operate at less revolutions for the same speed as it would operate under 3rd gear.

It gives you greater miles per gallon But it delivers less power to the driving wheels.

YOU CAN'T GET SOMETHING FOR NOTHING. or There's no free lunch.
