A carboxyl group is defined as one carbon with two oxygen's and one hydrogen in the form -COOH. The oxygen is bound to the carbon by a double bond and the hydroxyl (-OH) is also bound to the carbon but by a single bond. Carboxylation occurs when this group (-COOH) is added to another organic compound.
