Everyone has to ask this question, but from the looks of the answers, not many have put much thought into it. I just answered a similiar question, so I'll copy the answer here. It amazes me that so many people believe the answer is as simple as one choice, or that they can answer it for you.

People that simply work a "job" for money are only doing that to get by for now, or else they just don't get it.

When you figure out where your interests lie, it will be fun to learn and work, and will no longer be considered "a job." When you are in pursuit of your dreams and goals, it is exciting, rewarding, and there is nothing more satisfying and full of joy.

You are still young, and are the tail trying to wag the dog. You know you aren't worthless, and yet you probably are worthless in anything other than menial tasks in the "job" market until you learn something, until you prove your worth, and until you stand out head and shoulders above others that are just "working the job."

Since most people want life easy, you can step ahead of most people by challenging yourself. Don't limit your goals. The whole world awaits someone who makes up for a lack of intelligence with lots of study and hard work. If you are to succeed, you must have passion for what you do. Choose three things that really turn you on, that are profitable, and hit the library.

By focusing on what you like to do, rather than how much money you'll make, you will become the best in that business; the most knowledgable, the most adept, and the most wanted. Then the money will come.

Sitting on your couch, you cannot possibly see all of the possibilities that await you. But once you take the first step and begin to learn, doors will begin to open. You study harder to gain one of the doors, and hundreds of more doors show themselves. You study harder to reach the next level and gain yet another door, and thousands of doors present themselves. But when you know nothing, you don't even know what a door is, how to describe it, where to find it, or how to see it if you did, or have a clue what it meant.

There are so many places you can go wrong, and only a few right ways of thinking will help you. Your ability to concentrate fully and intensely can mean the difference between consistently taking home huge profits and barely staying above water. That's why it's important you stay alert and not waste your life or any time at all on drugs and temporal hedonistic pleasures. Wait until you are smack in the middle of your life's goal and purpose, and you will wish you had spent every waking moment in pursuit of your dreams.

One other thing: The world weeds out people who are unable to be honest with themselves. Concentrate on truth; yet another concept of "right" thinking.

One of the most important Samurai texts ever written, by Miyamoto Musashi, “The Book of the Five Rings (1643)”, offers this advice: “Think of what is right and true. Learn to see everything accurately. Become aware of what is not obvious. Be careful even in small matters. Do not do anything useless.”

There can be no great success in life without great commitment, hard work, discipline, and the realization of the “right” type of thinking.

It is your attitudes, beliefs, and discipline that ultimately yield results. Courage and positive attitudes combined with sound principles and methods will, in time, result in the desired outcome. Your persistence and determination to succeed is, in the final analysis, the critical element.

And one more thing; life is not about just you. You will find in this world exactly what you set out to give to it.

There are lots of good careers, if the problem that you're having is finding out what is your passion, then your local college can set you upon the Campbell Strong Interest tests, which ask you lots of questions and give you lots of directions based on how you answer - so answer thoughtfully and truthfully. Perhaps you would be a great forester, or mortician, but geez, you never really thought of it - both pay well.

The key is to find your passion and what you like to do - I like to talk, and I negotiate contracts - it's not what I'm trained to do (I'm a network architect by training), but I am good at it because it is my passion. Of course, I have two young children at home and am a single mom, and can do my job on the road, at home, or in the office - so the flexibility helps. (couldn't take the kids into the raised floor environment).

Technical work is great. Construction is pretty easy to get into. Make sure you learn a real skill though and get out there on your own.

Tiling is the easiest of the skills to learn. It is a specialty and there are so few who do it well and contractors are willing to pay big bucks for skilled guys
