Are we becoming so focused with teaching our children so much in academics that we have decided not to pay attention to things like family, friends or expressing themselves? Why can't they do more work in classrooms and leave home/family time more free?

Should there be homework on holidays?

Should we speak up or start a movement!?

Studies have shown that if we give our children too much homework over time, they will do worse on standardized testing! (All grades apply)

Is this contributing to family problems and teens turning to violence or offensive music or drugs/alcohol to get away from the problem???

Bound's Hubby here (high school history teacher):

Homework is becoming a greater evil with the implementation of the No Child Left Behind law. Teachers are being saddled with standards of performance most students will have difficulty achieving.

If you look at the CORE standards for New Jersey (see link below) this is what every student is supposed to achieve prior to the appropriate state standardized tests. There is no flexibility for whether the student is a special ed. student or an honor student. In order to meet these standards it is impossible to introduce the material, reinforce it, and test it during class time alone. Unfortunately, students must reinforce the information through homework.

I feel for your concern but your local teacher usually has their hands tied when it comes to homework.

Just as an aside, Time is a very liberal magazine and many of the articles seem to be creative.

It depends on what you mean by "too much" homework. Homework is vital to one's academic success. I guess if you REALLY bear down on students, they will start to hate school. I rarely had that problem in high school though. In college, I get much more homeworrk than I did in high school. It gets to be a pain at times, but if I did not have homework I would probably overlook something important in my studies. I suppose if you spend much more than four hours every day on homework, that is too much for high school and starting to push the limit for college. Four hours is OK though, especially if the student does not have a job (too many high school students want jobs, IMHO). But college is different because sometimes one will get assigned projects that require many hours to finish. But I think that if people were to stop watching so much TV and looking at junk sites on the Internet, there would be plenty of time to do homework and pretty much anything else one would want to do. I have almost no problem with TV, but I do spend too much time on the Internet for trivial things (like Y! Answers). It's fun, but I need to cut back. Good night!

Based on studies done, and statistically, the students of the United States are far behind their counterparts of most other countries. Most other nations have longer school days and longer school years. Additionally, their classroom time is spent for teaching, not doing homework. On average their students have between 3 and 4 hours of homework each weeknight and 5-6 each weekend. Additionally, most foreign countries have more years to attend school than we do. So....that's why US students have such a hard time passing basic proficiency tests and sometimes struggle and do poorly on SAT's.

The population of foreign students in US colleges is on a drastic rise because they blow the US students out of the water on their SAT's. We need to do much better and quit whining I think.

I would agree that there is to much homework, but then i'm a student and just speaking for all the sleep i'm missing just so i can get at least 2/3 of my home-work done. and yes it does keep me away from my family a lot. I only mainly see them during supper time now. However, i do take 2 AP classes, so i guess i did bring this upon myself.

If you are in the USA, then the answer would be no - they do not even provide enough homework.
From my seven years in US public school (middle/high school), I found out that they gave very little homework. That really sucks because we wont have much practices in that subject.
So I would recommend Honors/Ap classes where they give enough homework for students.

What country are you in? You must not be in the USA. In the USA, most schools do not give enough homework. Of course, if you don't want to do homework, you might as well forget about going to college or getting a decent job. Oh, and you're very wrong about standardized tests.
