I just saw Dances with Wolves last night for the first time. I am an avid movie watcher, so I have seen many. Favorite genres are drama, mystery, and comedy. Suggestions please!

This might sound so typical - but have you seen Citizen Kane? If not- rent the dvd and after you watch the movie watch it with the commentary too. I saw it only a few years ago in a film class, and I now see why it is such an amazing movie, way ahead of it's time. It really inspires you to watch some really good older movies, like anything by Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, etc.

I'm just taking a guess that you are alone and would prefer rentals so:

Tristan & Isolde (because us loners like a good, tragic romance now and then)

Running Scared (if you can get through the first 20 minutes you won't be sorry)

The 40 yr Old Virgin (I don't care who you are or what you say, this was the funniest movie out last yr)

I suggest Gangs of New York, Cinderella Man or Road To Perdition. A really funny movie is Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. Johnny Depp is hilarious.

These are my childhood favorites which have stood the test of time (and i hate classic movies):

1) Emperor of the North: starring ernest borgnine, lee marvin, and keith carradine. Story is about fearsome train conductor vs hobos in the depression era. funny, entertaining action drama.

2) Murder by Death: starring peter falk & other famous "detectives". This one's a murder mystery parody. a must-see for mystery and comedy fans!

Also, To Live: starring Gong Li. This is a chinese film which spans three decades of a tumultuous time period. story of riches to rags, love & death... one or two scenes may induce a teardrop.

I would suggest The Matador which was released this year and should be available to rent. It was an excellent character driven movie with a little comedy, a little drama and a little mystery.
