It seems like Home Depot has more of the work horse, utilitarian stuff, and lowes more of the designer stuff....for example...more toilets at HD, more toilet seats at Lowe's....more varites of plywood and drywall at HD....more flooring selection at Lowes...
I Think they sort of both have their place. but the Lowes is about 1/2 mile from my house, so i prefer Lowes

Lowes and Home Depot here about three miles apart. I'm with you .. if you are building a house go to Home Depot; if you are finishing one, Lowes.

Lowes. In my neighborhood, they are across the road(literally) from each other. I make my decision based on the garden center. So well organized and maintained. The people that work there are older and more informative than at Home Depot too. Better plant selection and healthier plants also. I understand that it is very shallow criteria, and in the next town the situation could be absolutely reversed just by the personnel employed there. But it is what it is and for me it is Lowes.

Lowes is ok but its more crowded than when you go to Home depot. That is when I go there anyway. I perfer Home depot over Lowes any day It seems like they have more employees than Lowes that will help you when you need it.

Lowes has horrible customer service in the Maryland area - all of them have real staffing issues. Home Depot's prices tend to be lower in our area, and the staff just seems much happier and helpful.

I prefer Lowes because I have found that they have cheaper prices then hd does. My husband and I are remodeling our house and we're working on the roof, our supplies were going to cost us about 30 extra dollars at HD then Lowes. And lowes had brand names that I knew of where I hadn't heard of the brands HD carried.

Home depot, definately. NEVER buy an appliance from lowes, they have horrible service. I paid for my new appliances back in May and did not have them installed and working until the middle of June.

Home Depot is the Walmart of hardware stores (reasonably priced or cheap), while Lowes is more like Macy's (expensive as hell)

Lowes is neater and cleaner but it's more fun to search for stuff at Home Depot.

Home Depot for basics--WAY more in stock (although Lowes has more unique items, like faceplates for wall mounted firewire outlets, etc..)
Lowes for tools and fixtures--better selection
