Outsourcing of work is part of a company's strategy to manage its cost structure in order to improve "The Bottom Line."

Sometimes this can be a foolish exercise since reducing costs is not the same as increasing revenues (sales or "top line") which is much more beneficial in the long run.

At best, outsourcing can actually help a company focus on those things it does best and hence raise its "top line" revenues while reducing costs. For example, many small to medium sized companies outsource a lot of their human resource activities to employment and payroll agencies since these agencies enjoy economies of scale and have developed in depth expertise in those functions: they perform the work better and at lower cost than the small company could, allowing the small company to focus its resources on what it does best.

Thus, one possible thesis could be: "Outsourcing of non-essential functions can help companies lower their operating costs and improve bottom line results."

Another could be: "Outsourcing can damage a company's ability to compete successfully if the decision is driven only by cost reduction considerations and fail to account for the broader business picture."

G'day Missy McCray,

Thank you for your question.

Possible thesis statements are:

Outsourcing is beneficial because it improves the efficiency of the economy.

Alternatively, you might want nt to look at the need for skills training for displaced workers.

I also enclose links from the web that provide further guidance.

Regards
