What is your education background? Do you have a degree, and if so what is it in? What does "proficient" mean...did you take a class and pass it, or have you been using it for a while?
Many architecture/engineering firms will only hire people w/ an architecture/engineering degree or are in architecture or engineering school. There are tons and tons of companies that make building products, that use AutoCAD to make production/shop drawings. Also, subcontractors use CAD for reading plans as well as doing shop drawings.
When you go looking for jobs and on interviews, bring samples of your CAD work, that show you know how to use it. They will be interested in knowing how fast and accurate your drafting is.

Engineering Firms
Architectural Firms
Manufacturing Plants
Go to your local Job Bank, Unemployement Office, or where ever jobs are listed in your community and do some research.
Also, if you have no experience, talk to some of the Temp Employment Agencies and see if they have any demand. That would help you get some experience.
You could also talk to small manufacturing firms that do not have anyone on staff and see if they are needing someone to do Free Lance work.

depends what applications you specialize in. If you do the mapping end of autocad, you could work for a municipality as an assistant to the town engineer and make a decent living. Otherwise, plenty of engineering and production firms need technicians.
