Your best bet is to buy clothes when you get there. Pack a light suitcase that won't give you too much trouble while traveling. 2-3 pairs of pants, a few t shirts, a sweat shirt or two. Underwear and socks you can buy when you get there. You can always buy toiletries and all that stuff when you arrive. A few of your favorite books, mementos from home, etc. Don't load yourself down for the trip. If you were planning on buying new clothes before you left, just wait. That's awesome that you are going to Tokyo! You are going to have a great time, don't stress too much over what to bring

For the half mile walk to the dorm, you might consider taking a taxi, if possible. I would not count on buying my shoes in Japan. Once when I was in Europe, I needed to buy a pair of shoes as the only pair I brought broke. I couldn't find any to fit me. All the shoes were way too wide and I am a medium. I don't know how it is in Japan, but I will never travel again with only one pair of shoes. Mailing clothes ahead is an excellent idea. Consider mailing the light bulky stuff. Also, using those bags that flatten items, such as pillows, blankets, and coats might be of help. Good luck

My friend who went to Japan for a year said that it can get quite cold there. She said the actual temperature isn't that cold, but that it is a damp cold and most of the buildings don't have a lot of heating. Therefore, I would suggest bringing some really warm clothes.
Also, I would bring a laptop so you can stay in touch with friends back home, and your favourite pillow. A good pillow is essential. You may also want to bring a few pictures of family and friends, and a couple of books in English.

You should be allowed 2 suitcases and a carry on... (You can use luggage with wheels and a backpack, which should be ok to lug along with you.) So pack your clothes and whatever you want to remind you of home (something small of course). You might need blankets and pillows, but you can buy those there or they might even offer a "welcome" package type of deal. I go to school in Finland, and I know that one of my friends who came from Norway didn't bring a blanket or anything, so for the first couple of nights he had to use his jacket as a pillow!

Can you have extra clothing sent to you when you get there? I think that would be a good idea.
Keep all important papers (e.g., passport, medical information, telephone numbers, etc.) and some Japanese money, as well as U.S. traveler's checks and cash on your body. A passport case that goes around your neck and under your clothing, a money belt, or a waist pack are very handy. U.S. passports are valuable commodities overseas, so keep them handy, but safe. Make a copy of your passport, in case you lost it, as it is much easier to get another one.
Rule of thumb: carry your luggage around four blocks. If you cannot, remove some of your luggage contents and carry it once again.

oof! well, my last roommate was okinawan, and he had stuff (packages) mailed over here...so for now, you could pack a suitcase or two...pack it with clothes you wear most, and that you can layer, depending on the weather (t-shirts, longsleeve shirts, hoodies, a jacket, poncho or umbrella, an extra pair of shoes, 10 pairs of boxers/whatever and socks, so if socks get wet you have extra)
if you can fit a rolled-up poster or two, or a tapestry to hang on the wall, it'll make your room a little more home-y and comforting...my roomie never had anything on his wall...it looked so bare and depressing... :(
and without a doubt - BRING MUSIC! iPod, or discman, whatever! if you have cd's, make "mixes" of consolidating favorite songs, thus saving space! but music will definitely help keep any homesickness away....! :)
a laptop if you can fit it...just so you have a compy and internet--AIM and such to stay in contact with friends/family!
best of luck! enjoy and have a good glass of sake for me! ;)
peace
