some get to the point that they understand that they are special.
Remember there are different levels or stages of retard's. some can think up to an age 5 or some can think up to an age 10. If you can observe a normal 5 yr old by a normal 10 yr old, then that is also their capabilities. these ages get emotions of jealousy and have ideas of comparison. I have a neighbor who is a retard, she can only think at age 7. She knows when she is not treated equally with her cousin, though she may not understand so much why she can't have everything the same with her cousin she knows how to ask "why?".

she also has picked up a few nasty comments from nasty cousins years ago that she is dumb and got implanted in her mind that when she seems to feel that she is getting unequal treatment then she blurts out that she is dumb that's why she doesn't get like what others can get. -- > this is something to be watched out to get into their minds.

Many people who are mentally retarded seem to respond to others with some level of frustration when they cannot do what others do. Or when they are misunderstood or sense they are being made fun of. Mental Retardation can a part of a wide spectrum. And every person (mentally retarded or not)deserves respect and a chance to become the most successful adult they can be. Your question is a good one. Many people are put off by folks with limitations or disabilities. But my life is richer and blessed for certain by spending most of my time with people who need assistance. It is a gift to my heart.

THAT is a question that has plagued me since I was a child. My paternal aunt has Down Syndrome and does not know she is any different. I would sit in class and judge my classmates to see if they were retarded and since I decided they were not, I probably wasn't either. However, I was still not POSITIVE because my aunt went to her special school and I figured she probably didn't realize her classmates were retarded either.

I am in my early 50's now and am reasonably sure that I am not retarded. I held a job for 25 years, have a successful marriage, raised two daughters, drive a car and run a household. But every now and then, like when I can't figure out how to operate the DVD player, I have to wonder. Are we ever really sure????

I do not know, but I do know that the term (retarded) is not used any longer to describe people with many different types of disabilities!
Please do some more homework on the difficulities that many people have to go through.
I knew a man that was (retarded) and I discovered he was an amazing person ! because I took the time to get to know him.

Well it really depends on how high functioning they are. Some do know that they are different from "normal" people. Then there are some who are so profoundly retarded that they have no clue. They have to use all of thier capacity just to deal with whatever situation they are in at the time. hopes this helps

I find this question particularly offensive as the parent of a special needs child. However, I will try to be objective here. Probably not. Which means, you yourself may be retarded and not know it!!

Well, they may have an idea that they aren't the same, but as far as thinking in terms of others being better, not at all...because it is not true. They don't think about that kind of stuff. They are such happy people, and here we are, with supposedly "more intelligence," but they are such wonderful people--they each have something unique about them and they are still contributors to society. Actually I think they are so much more advanced than most people think--they know that crap like who's smarter doesn't matter. When it all comes down to it, they are just like us. :)

I don't know if it is offensive to ask this question, but it was asked very tactlessly. Anyway, I believe people with Williamson syndrome do know this, but i am not sure about other disorders.

I imagine those who are more highly functioning do, but not those who are unable to comprehend basic ideas.
