Yes it is. The reason being is because they do more than hand the food to you. Usually they are the ones who took the order then went and got it ready for you. Not to mention servers and bartenders make less than minimum wage. Tips are their primary source of income.

I think it would depend on what type of food you ordered. I used to work as a hostess at a nice restaurant and I took the to-go orders. If someone ordered a salad or a baked potato with their meal, I had to go into the kitchen and get them salad dressing or sour cream, bacon bits, and cheese. It wasn't a big deal, but it just goes to show that there are people out there doing things behind the scenes to make sure that their customers are happy. I would check my order before I left the restaurant and depending on the service and the quality of the meal, I would leave a tip. You can tell when someone has gone the extra mile for you, or if they just threw your food in a bag and said "have a nice day".

You wouldn't think so, right? But I went to a restaurant in Sacramento (it's combination Filipino/Chinese) and ordered a tray of food. I think the original price was $29.31 (not sure I didn't keep the receipt) and they added the 15% tip making it a grand total of $34.48.

So, I'd advise you to add a tip or at least round it up to an even number. Save yourself the grief of them adding an outrageous tip. I mean they didn't charge me an enormous amount or anything but...... Better safe than sorry.

I do. Of course it is not neceassry! I think of this type of tip as a gesture of apprecaition rather than part of the server's wages, so generally I leave a dollar. Depends on lots of things.

I tip when the bar tender gets the food bc he could've been serving a tipping customer. I tip counter people at Delis or whereever if they have a skill in making my food. Throwing something in a bag = no tip. Remembering that I like double tomatoes and no pickles = tip.

It depends what kind of restaurant it is. If it's like a pizza place, then no you don't. But if it's a sit-down-waitress-take-your-order type of place, then yes. It is proper to tip at this kind of place. They make most of their money on tips at places like that anyway. At fast food restaurants they get paid at least minimum wage. Everywhere else they don't. Hope that makes sense.

It would totally depend. You don't tip to go at a fast food place but you don't if you eat there either the biggest differance between the 2 is not really the service you get cause either way you have to carry your food....but at a more upscale place you might get differant service levels and the more service you get the more likely it is that you should tip.

It's not necessary to do so, but if you do a lot of to-go ordering at the place, a simple buck would be sufficient. Next time, they will remember you and give your order priority over others.

Not usually. If you go to a table cloth restaurant and order to go from a menu that takes some organizing, a tip is in order.

I'm not sure if it's "necessary", but it's kind of like tipping the guy who delivers your pizza. I wouldn't give the customary 20% that you've give a regular server, but you could give them a couple of dollars.
My friend's son works at the Applebee's to-go part and he still relies on tips to supplement his meager wages.
