Caliber does not note the amount of energy load, but the diameter of the bullet. Example, a 500 nitro express and a .50 caliber browning share identical bore sizes, but the .50 caliber has a third again the energy load. The most powerful caliber in the world is the 18inch gun of the world war 2 that was on the Japanese battleship Yamamoto. The web site below is one of the finest web sites about firearms in the world.

When you talk about gun, it can means .38 S&W to 76 Oto Melara or bigger. Guns defination is far too big.
Again, different calliber guns have different purposes and function. The power depends very much on that.
Magnum, is a very good piston. Powerful and accurate. But such weapon is not suitable for most asian as thier hands is small to hold it upright.
.38 S&W revolver is very reliable and accurate. But some of the westerner will find it hard to even put their finger in. (This weapon is design and made in US).
Again, Ammo used for Police and Military are again different. Police is to inmobilised the subject, thus most of the projectile is lead.
Military is to defence and attack, they will have brass projectile. Brass will penetrate thru, and the person hit will find it hard to survived. But for the lead, it will stuck inside the body, giving enough time for the doctor to operate on him, and also the time required for the police to build up the case.
So, to me as a Chinese, if for defence purposes, I will just take .38 short barrel (detective model). Small, and ease to hide.
If the area is deem to be danger, and only small arms are availble, I will choose P226 (standard military pistol).
However, if in urban, and I can have rifle, I love HKMP5. Short range, but very easy to use, and very accurate. In urban fighting, much better than M16 and AK47/5.56.
(AK have 5.56 rounds in Asia).
But if I am in jungle, I will chose M16 (new version of AR15). or better, the carbine version (smaller version of M16).
Shorter weapon will mean less accurate. But it is to handle, and with my personal marksmanship, I am happen to have the shorter weapon.
But now as Christian, the only weapon I want to use is the word of God. Bible. I have used it to defence against the evil spirit, and also for my daily bread.
With Bible, i have learn to use it for daily 'battle', as it shows me that the greatest strategy is love. Love your enemy, and they will no more be enemy. What a powerful weapon indeed.

50 cal. If you are looking for a "big" hand gun, try a dessert eagle, but you will probably break your wrist shooting the darn thing.
