as an independant contractor, a plumber can charge between $65-$85/hr... but remember, this needs to cover their business costs and all. Still, if they get a lot of business and they run it properly, it's quite a tremendous living! As an employee, you can make $25/hr even up to $40/hr if you get in with a hardass union... but at least then you don't have all the business problems and liabilities and overhead costs and insurance and bla bla bla to worry about. It's also a labor-intensive and often messy job.
If that's the route you want to go, you need to go to a tech college and not a university, of course. A university education would be a gross waste of money. Tech schools offer courses in business and accounting too, so you can get that end of it as well. And it would be nice if you're handy... don't do it if you're done with high school and have never used a wrench before.
But it's definitely a good living! And it's infinitely better than getting a degree in a field where you can't get a job!! There's ALWAYS a need for plumbers, especially good reputable ones! Don't listen to foofies who think everyone needs to be a doctor or a lawyer, because there are too many college grads serving frappuchinos for $9/hr and paying off $60,000 student loans for that degree in Russian Literature. It's good solid work that never goes away, and that's job security. Do what you think is right for you, but don't let people downtalk blue collar work because there's a lot to be said for the folks that keep the water flowin!

I know a plumber who makes upwards of $250k a year, one man shop and all he has is a GED. He is however a very good business man and great with people. His customers are very happy. That is the part that determines how well someone does, customer satisfaction.

Plumbers can earn very well. However, if you're in college and want to make the most income from plumbing, study business. One day you can run your own plumbing company, then you'll be making bank!
