I've always admired them, but am a novice. What types of criteria should I use to seperate the good from the bad? Am I better off looking at 60's, 50's? Just starting out, so bring me in. I'm in Chicago too.

Here's a tip. Unless your a BMW mechanic, don't buy an old one.

Get the 2006-2007 model. I just shopped the New BMW 1200's this is the best bike hands down to own and ride, this is coming from a HD owner.

The BMW 1200 has electric windshield, you can adjust, which cuts all the wind noise. It's electronics are better on the newer bikes, the brakes are ABS and have come along way from 1970's bikes. The reason I say to you to buy a new one is, the break in period is more than 25,000 miles, which means you most likely will not break it in unless you ride from coast to coast, which you could on this motorcycle, without any problem.

Go check one out in person, you will be glad you did, they are worth the money.

I have a BMW R80/7 built in 1978. It is easy to work on, has loads of power, and fun to modify. I recently made a "cafe racer" out of it by modifying the fenders and air intakes and adding an R90 faring! Whee!
I would recommend you take advantage of the technological advances made over the years. Bikes from the 50s and 60s are great museum pieces, but can be cranky, and most don't have electric starters (a major plus for BMWs, which can be kind of "cold natured" aka "hard to start").
There are many good places to buy older Beemers. I would try the BMW shop, for starters. Old ones never die, they just get traded in. If you want to go a ways, you could try the IMBWR.org marketplace, which has a whole section of "airheads" for sale.
Good luck and good riding!
