Yeah. I am saving for a really good lap top. I DO NOT want to buy it online at all, no adds, or magaziens. I just wana Go to a normal store and buy one (And when i say normal i mean stores like best buy, comp usa, ect.) Comp Usa would be a better store. So what KIND of lap top should i get?

First of all, some computer stores are nasty. Ask them about their return policy, and watch the guy turn GREEN.

I recommend that you look at the Toshiba at STAPLES. It's about $800. But get the Staples REWARD card and watch for rebates. Staples is AWESOME about returns, and here's why. They simply don't want to sell crappy products. They want the customers happy, not the suppliers.

Costco also has this preference toward customers. They also carry Toshiba, and have several models. But the lower priced one is at Staples. Costco membership will easily pay-off with just one purchase, so GO FOR IT.

I agree with you. You HAVE to see a laptop computer when you are buying it. That is pretty hard to do on-line.

There are oodles of choices out there.

Avoid Compaq.

Since you didn't say in $$s what you are willing to spend,
1) 512 Mb RAM
2) AMD Athlon (heckova lot cheaper than Intel Pentium
3) 40 GB HD
4) the fastest WIFI you can afford

The software is expensive, but if you are a student, Microsoft will sell you Office (Word, Excel & Powerpoint) at an extreme discount.

Make certain you have current antivirus software (Avast, Grisoft AntiVir) offer free checkers to 'home' users.

Antispyware: SpyBot Search&Destroy, Ad-Aware, Windows Defender, and SpyBlaster. These are "clean" freeware.

If you are going to be going broadband, get a costomizable firewall - ZoneAlarm & Kerio offer free firewalls. Threre are others out there - Yahoo! search for 'em.

Remember - 1 Antivirus & 1 Firewall

Watch the adds in Sundays paper,2 weeksago I bought a new compaq laptop with all the bells and whistles with a new printer included. After rebates etc the whole 9 yards cost just slightly over $300 and I have been completely satisfied. The store in this case was Office Depot and I saw the add in Sunday's paper. I have not heard much good about Dell laptops from my some of my friends and my sister.

I bought mine at Office Depot. It's a TOSHIBA. I paid about $1300 but got around $500 back. Don't buy a Dell!
