This garment has already been washed, but it didn't come off. I don't know what kind of paint it was (other than really sticky!). Thanks

If it was latex you are in luck. Make paste out of oxiclean and water and apply to the paint and let it set for 1 to 2 hrs then wash as usual

More info needed such as fiber content ( cotton, wool, rayon, nylon) , weave of fabric ( such as denim or organdy).

Then guesses are needed regarding type of paint and the solvents that remover or break down that sort of paint and whether they would damage the fabric even worse.

Depending on the delicacy and value of the garment to you, you may want to take it to your local high quality dry cleaner and ask for thier assistance, or perhaps a local re-weaver if the drycleaner offers no hope.

If it is just relatively low value sturdy casual heavy cottons such as yard work blue jeans, and you think that it is an oil based paint, you might use paint thinner in one of two ways. Either hold the painted section of fabric over a bowl with the painted side down, pour paint thinner through the fabric into the bowl, and scrub from the back side with an old sturdy toothbrush until the paint loosens from front side of fabric. Or you could soak the entire item in paint thinner ( outdoors) avoid flames and sparks. Then drain in an environmentaly safe fashion, and rinse the garment well outdoors before re-washing in hot grease removing detergent such as Tide/ Dawn/ Formula 409. wash well perhaps twice before even thinking of placing this garment in a dryer, to avoid fire and explosion risks due to paint thinner flammability.

You can try "Goof Off"--available all over wherever paint is sold.

You may have to just live with it, but I'd try the Goof Off first. Good luck!
