I think you mean a "Dear John" letter; that's the one written to break up with someone. John Deere is the name of a tractor.

It is not a John Deere letter. It is a Dear John letter. John Deere is the name brand of a tractor. A Dear John letter means that your boyfriend or girlfriend is breaking up with you. I think the reason they call it that is most people start out letters to their boyfriend as Honey, or Sweetie or Hey Cutie and when you read Dear (______) you will know it is serious and not a usual letter.

A john deere letter is an idiots reference to a Dear John letter. Likely first used in "Dumb and Dumber" when Harry is talking about an old girlfriend sending him a john deere letter when he actually means a Dear John letter.

Do you mean a Dear John letter? If that is what you meant, it is a letter explaining to someone that you want to break up. I think there were a lot of them during the war when women couldn't bear to be without their men, so they dumped them.
