A home girl or home boy from the barrio, I dont think it is a negative thing, just a slang like brotha and sista.

vato (slang) A Chicano slang term for Mexican or latino youth. It may be used with intimate friends or as a derogatory reference. The English equivalent would be "man", "guy" or "dude."
There are gang connotations with the use of this term, Vato Loco is used to describe a "crazy dude", "gangster" or "gangbanger."
vata is the feminine form of the word. Also used by chicano hoockers to describe a female who may owe them money.

In northern Mexico, the word "vato" is used a lot. It can be interpreted as saying: dude, bro, man, etc.

In spanish is like guy, but is and old word.

it just reminds me of how mad I get when i am in a phone tree and have to press 1 for English....hel -f***ing-o we are in America, you press 1 for another language and let my call continue in MY language
