Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan, and Shaq all turned down invitation to tryout for the national team. Duncan also played very poorly in the '04 Olympics. He really had a hard time adjusting to the international style, and soon after the '04 games, he made it clear that he wan't going to play for Team USA again. If you remember how he played in the '04 Olympics, to say Duncan was awful would be a serious understatement.

Kobe Bryant had knee surgery in July and was unable to play. He will very probably be on the team in '08.

Also, Team USA is asking for a 3 year commitment from its players, which wasn't the case in the past, and many players didn't want to make that long term commitment. So, a lot of top players took themselves out of consideration for the team because they didin't want to give that much of their time to be on the national team.

The ultimate goal of Team USA is for a return to the gold medal stand in 2008. This tournament was as much to see if the new approach USA Basketball is taking can put together a team that can match up well against teams playing the internaitonal style as to have a good showing in the FIBA games. They showed that they can put together a team that can compete against teams that have played together for years, and they still have 2 years to make the adjustments they need to be even better for '08. Remember, this was a team that had about a month to get it together, competing against teams that have played together for years, and they didn't do that badly.

Like it or not, the days when USA Basketball could just grab up any 12 all-stars and have them do their individual thing without calling timeouts is over.

To add: Players like Shane Battier are good additions to the team. He's a good role player, good team player, underrated defender. The days when the team could just be a collection of superstars who didn't have to work together are over, it just won't work anymore. Role plaeyrs are important to the success of a good team. USA basketball wants to bring continuity to the team, build a team that will play together for at least 3 years, know each other and how to play well together.

Also, because players were invited to try out instead of being offered spots on the team outright, there were some players who didn't want to participate. So, some players aren't on Team USA because of their ego.

Let's see...

Shaq is horrible at Screen Roll Defense and free throw, he will be DESTROYED by good outside shooting that will draw him out, so the opponents can cut to the basket. Besides that, he is old!!

Kobe will drive into zone defense regardless any teammate is open, which means either the Offensive foul or turnover - Liability (yeah, T-Mac is exactly the same plus how fragile T-Mac is...)

Duncan was disappointment in 04 Olympic, and is bad at free throw as well, but at least could draw doubles if the opponents are playing 1on1. By the way, he is getting old and full of injuries.

KG is the only worth sending because of his skill, but he hasn't been playing well.

Oh by the way, we need good selfless point guards. In NBA, there are Jason Kidd and Sam Cassell Left. And they don't have much left in them.... Besides them, the best point guards are internation players such as Steve Nash and Tony Parker.

I rather that US team has

1. Ray Allen - Somone can shoot free throw and 3 pts in a hurry

2. Gilbert Arenas - Needless to say, a very good point guard

3. Chauncey Billups - Best US point guard..., but always have excuse not to represent, just like his Piston Teammate Rick Hamilton.

Well that's it

ps. Who really want to watch Shaq and Kobe on the same team again? LOL, havent' them clowned themselves enough during Lakers' break up?

I rather watch a team with Kobe and T-Mac together. It will always be 1 against 5 no matter who touches the ball.

Team USA invites players to try out. Allen Iverson did not get an invite, Kobe Bryant had knee surgery, Chancey Billups wife had a new baby. After an 82 game schedule and playoffs some players want the summer off. Nearly all the top big name players did come out. Team USA has to improve playing the international style of basketball. The rest of the world has improved in the game in basketball foreign players are well represented in the NBA. College players would not stand a chance against the national teams that have NBA/professional players.

We didn't send our best? Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, and Shane Battier must be some hacks they picked up outside of the airport? Face facts: Greece outplayed us. They beat us fair and square, between the lines, during regulation. If that list of overpaid millionaires can't put the hustle together for their country, who could?

We didn't send Shaq, Kobe, or Tim Duncan? Do you think they might have been invited? What are the odds that our second list of overpaid millionaires declined that invitation?

Here's a suggestion. Let's take the top college team and let them represent our country. Or maybe an all star college team. Let some guys who have some heart, some drive, some desire, represent basketball for our country.

First off, the FIBA championships are continuing for a few more years, so age will become a major factor. Shaq isn't as dominant as he used to be-and in the world championships, size isn't as much of a deal as it is in the NBA. Tim Duncan is getting up there in age, and was on the team last year and wasn't contacted as far as I know to play this year. And my main man Kobe, recently had surgery on his knee so he won't play until the Championships start back up in a few years. And finally, KG-getting up there in age as well.

sorry to pop this bubble.

dwayne wade was the NBA finals MVP.

lebron is the saviour of the NBA.

elton brand is awesome and probably 3rd in MVP voting last season.

just sick-o players that are expected to dominate guys you never heard of. supposed. KG, Duncan, Shaq... would definitely change things I imagine, but lets just face the facts. is getting paid like 10 million a season all that great for that burning fire in your heart to seek n destroy? is there enough incentive for these guys? we all know the only country kids growing up in romania WANT to play basketball is in the NBA. look at all those awesome players from all over the world disbursed to their own country's respective teams.

carmelo looks like he just wants to play video games until the nuggets get their record to like... 25-20 and then join up and go crazy, until playoff time.

First of all, those players are full of drugs and steroids etc.
The second thing I want to say is:how many years can those players play? You had a great dream team once.Ok,that is past now,go on to create a new one.If you try and you can not that means that this period of time there are not so many talents in your country as that time.I don't think that this is something bad, maybe in 5 years you should have a dream team better than this before.

I agree, but Duncan, KG, Shaq, and Kobe doesn't necessarily mean we would win. It would still be hard. These guys are older than the players on on the team now, but more experienced. I'd take Duncan over Howard. I'd take Garnet over Bosh. I'd take Shaq over Brad Miller. I'd take Kobe over Jamison. But I do respect they players that did give up their time to play for our country.
