My guess would be that they are spending so much time on their computer, that they aren't giving themselves a chance to have a real life with real people. :-)
Seriously now, they are probably lonely and bored and just looking for a way to pass the time. I doubt that they want anything more than an on line friend in reality, but they need to get somebody's attention first to do it. It can be hard as a teen to make friends when you aren't one of the popular people. So they need a friend that won't judge them based on their high school social standing.
