Early brainwashing by parents is the primary cause. Children are also brainwashed to be religious...to think that their "elite group" is better than others. Persons with low self-esteem need to feel "better" than others.

I pretty much agree with Larry.

We just discussed in my Pol-Sci class that parents are the major cause of political opinion in children.

I guess people just grow up with parents who are racist, and emulate it. It's like a parrot; say something enough, and eventually it'll catch on.

Because people are not infallible and have a need to rationalize other people and how they relate to them. They place everything in categories they can deal with and/or in terms they can understand. This is often, if not always erroneous, as well as offensive to others when verbalized and/or articulated. That's pretty much it.....

Racism isn't so much about hatred of the other race but rather feeling better than someone else. It is also a way of unifying people(the racist).

all good answers above and true. but i think its in the upbringing. after an education in schools, after everything, American parents still fail to abolish racism. and probably because of their upbringing as well. please don't teach your child hate. it starts from the home. certainly kids will run into various situations, but by not teaching hate but rather celebrating the jewel of the world that is America for its variety in cultures, we would all benefit in the future.

They fail to have compassion and right judgment. When we are born, as babies, we don't care who is in the cradle next to us in the hospital. When we die, we don't care who is in the grave next to ours. Now, if we could just feel that way in the middle....
