I have "purchased" several domain names from a couple of different places. Do I actually own the domain names, or am I renting them. I know there are upkeep fees. I am worried about my website being very successful, then the owners jacking up the "rent". Is there a place that I can flat out purchased my domain names? Thanks for the help in taking down my virtual landlords.

Domain names are purchased and belong to the owner. Different registrars can sell domain names for any price they please; however once purchased they are yours and the price cannot be raised. You have to periodically renew the registration, but you can choose which registrar to use. Below is a link to ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers; they ultimately control domain names. Be sure and don't let your domain expire because then someone else can register it and then sell it to you, at a very inflated price. Also Internic is another good source of info. Their FAQ might help too. There are no upkeep fees unless the website is providing some other service, such as e-mail.

When you buy a domain, what you do is become entitled to its use. Now, as long as you renew the yearly (or whatever period you have agreed on) payment, nobody can "steal" it from you. Make sure you go with the big guys as there are a lot of companies out there who are out to get you. Beware also of searching for domain names in these "suspicious" sites as what they sometimes do is tell you the name is no longer available and then they turn around and register it in their name... I've seen it happen.

Many others have already mentioned these, but once more won-t hurt. Go for:

godaddy
register
networksolutions
1and1

I personally work with Godaddy

Have you gone to www.directnic.com?

That is where I buy mine.

But am I buying or renting? I don't know.

If you have been there and it's renting, sorry to have wasted your time.
