i was told that there were to actors going for the postion and the actor playing now was a second option, who was the first?

Yes, that was Stewart Townsend, who was supposed to be Aragorn. They started filming and Peter Jackson realized that Townsend just looked too young to be Aragorn. So he chose Vigo Mortensen instead. (I don't think I spelled that right.) Anyhow, it was a good choice, because Stewart Townsend can't act his way out of a paper bag.

Stuart Townsend, he was fired on the first day of shooting the film. Google "Townsend Aragon" you'll find a pic of Stuart in costume of Aragon.
