Most tournaments pay a certain amount based on how far you go. The loser in the finals of the US open will still get a nice size check. Some of the top players are paid appearance fees they get paid a certain amount to enter and play in the tournament.

Sometimes. Rafaël Nadal get money when he didn't win a tournament, but Michaela Krajichek don't get money when she didn't win a tournament.

It all depends on how far you make it in the tourney; as for percentages, i am not to sure; it is probably around 5-10% of the total purse(prize money)

Yes, it depends on the tournament, though. For instance, if you win just the first round of the US Open you get $16K US.
