Ghosts do not live without. They live within the inner depth of your unconscious. They rise to the surface of conscious only when you are stirred emotionally. It could be due to fear, anxiety, unfulfilled wish or desires. When this happens mind has an ability to create an image. It projects it out ahead of what you see. It is an extreme of imagination. You begin to see things where they do not exist. This is how you see ghosts.

People are superstitious and prefer believing stereotypes as oppose to educating themselves to reality. Why do you think religions are so popular? Same thing, people are lazy and rather have some organization/belief to make up their minds.
