i had one with my c-section. they put iodine (COLD) on your back to sterilize the area, then they put in a very thin catheter for the medicine to go into your spine. not worse than any other shot, just a poke and pressure. i had spinal fluid leakage, which is rare, but i had horrible headahces and they had to do a bloodpatch to fix it! totally worth it!

it is not the same as an epidural!

It's basically the same as an epidural, which several others already explained, but a spinal block is much more powerful. The spinal goes in just the same as an epidural, through a long needle into a cavity at the base of your spine. The drugs begin to work quickly, and very soon, within minutes, you can't feel anything from your chest, down. A spinal is typically what they will do for a c-section, unless it is an emergency, and they need to put you out with general anesthesia, and take the baby as quick as possible.

I had my son by a semi-planned c-section, and had a spinal. It was not bad at all. I was more nervous about the fact that the operating table was very, very narrow, and I was sure that I'd fall off. Obviously, I was scared and irrational, but hey! Gotta gimme a little credit, cause I was almost 2 weeks over-due at that point.

A spinal block is similar to an epidural, except it is a lot stronger and makes you completely numb from the waist down. Usually, they are used for c-section patients, that's when I had a spinal block. It is the worst thing ever! They were digging in my back for what seemed like hours to stick that thing in! They stick a huge needle in to numb you. I think it involves sticking some little tube in place to give you a steady stream of medicine, but I'm not certain, I was in such horrible pain and I was drugged-up from the morphine, which made me itch like crazy! But, anyway, did I mention it's incredibly painful? It takes along time to position the spinal block correctly sometimes, but usually only if you are on the heavy side or retaining alot of water and are swollen up. But, I remember, the insertion of the spinal block hurt worse than the labor pain, and prior to the spinal block, I had been in hard labor for 21 hours or so without meds, so that is saying alot!

First one is given strong relaxing meds orally. Anesethic is injected at the base of the spine.
Ones lower half of the body becomes numb.
By the end of surgery, it begins to wear off and in a few hours all is back to normal.
No pain involved.
I've had it about 3 times.

It is used when you're having a c-section and you're staying awake for the operation.

You don't feel any pain and you cannot move. When the baby is removed you can possibly feel tugging, but thats about it.

They give you an injection into the space between your spine. It blocks feeling to your lower half.

Pretty sure its an epidural and it make you feel like a piece of roast beef, you can't feel or move ANYTHING below the injection site which is in the spinal cavity

it's call an epidural....it blocks the pain receptors to the lower portion of your body depending on where they place the cather along your spine. Thu that they are able to give you medications.

You don't feel anything from the waste down. They stick a long needle in your spine.
