Yes, but it's dependent upon many things. As of right now, China has the 5th largest economy in the world based only on its GDP. But there are many sociological conditions to worry about. Such as the growing gap between the rich and the poor, increase in the annual GNI, it can take anywhere from 5 to 50 to 100 years to fix. So, if a thriving middle class becomes developed in China then it will happen.

They will catch the Japanese, the European Union, and the USA. Probably not in a few years, but in 20-30 years the world economy could look very different.
They are hungry, determined, HEAVILY populated, focused, goal driven. Will their standard of living approach ours any time soon, NO. But they will continue to make strides forward.
Their economy is going to continue to grow, and to give opportunities to everyone world wide.

I would like to think that China will surpass Japan in the future. Japan is in a recession and China is in a economic boom. So rite now there both movings in defferent directions.
