Depends on the profession, the area you're in, and the image you are trying to convey.
I do it all the time, but when I go to court, I have a jacket over it and nobody is any the wiser because my short sleeve shirts are not the casual print types, but solids.
If you are a salesperson, engineer, or some other profession with more relaxed dress codes, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a short sleeve pattern with a matching tie, but if you're a professional, I would recommend against it and go with the solids.
Next, what type of area are you in? If you're kinda country, nobody's too concerned, so go for it. If you're city or suburban, you're probably correct to be concerned and I'd follow the above rules.
Lastly, what type of image are you trying to convey? If you're trying to convey the professional, no-nonsense look, go solids in conservative colors. Approachable, but still professional, solids in more relaxed colors and maybe some striped. Relaxed professional not concerned about what others think, whatever the heck you please.
Hope this helps.

It's absolutely okay! It's more than okay!
It's kinda saddening how people are stuck in age-old formalities. "Red blouses go with red skirts and red shoes." "Don't wear white after labor day." "Stripes don't go with plaid." Geez. People, abandon the old and try adopting something new.
Anyway, with the right haircut, right pants (straight leg and slightly snug around the thighs), and shoes, a slim man can look very dashing in this outfit. Very Dior Homme. Trust me on this. You can even check it out online.
I recommend a white or a pastel blue shirt and a solid SKINNY tie. Don't wear the regular wide ties, go buy some skinny ties! A wide tie would overwhelm a short-sleeved shirt.
Kudos for stepping out of the box! Hedi Slimane will be proud of you!

It might be okay in today's popular opinion, but please.....don't. No matter how I look at it, it's just wrong. It just isn't very cool, or classy. Save your reputation here, at least a little and wear a long sleeve shirt with the tie, or leave the tie off & unbutton the top button on a short sleeve shirt and go casual.

I have to wear a tie and dress shirt to work every day, plus I use to sell mens suits, and That is the dumbest looking thing to wear is a short sleeve dress shirt with a tie. I would never do it. It would just feel silly doing that.

Neck ties are Ugly and pointless...
As a woman you know what i find to be sexy?
I like an 18th century suit on a man, they wore neck ties
but different kind, it was either a ruffly top or a giant bow
that hung all the way down the chest.VERY SEXY!!
Or for a more modern look, I like the collarless dress shirts
you know the ones where the collar buttons together
and there is nothing hangs over, that is SEXY! Plus
wear it with some nice professional brown leather
suspenders and some slacks. NO JACKET MMMM!!!
Very sharp VERY SEXY!

Wearing a tie with a short sleeved shirt is ok if your co-workers do the same. It's also ok if you are wearing a jacket with the shirt. Long sleeves do look better, but sometimes long sleeves aren't practical.

In some business situations where a tie is required, then yes. Some wear a short sleeve shirt under their jacket. I admit it does not look very attractive though. But when it's really hot out, and a tie is mandatory, you can't blame these guys!

No, short sleeved shirts are informal, you'll look like Homer Simpson and that's a big faux pass

IMHO, no...looks silly (unless you want to scream to the world that you're 16 years old). Neck ties go with long sleeve shirts.
