As much as I dislike govt intervention in our lives. This is one that I don't have a problem with. There are many people who do not own up to certain responsibilites. And you can really mess somebody up If you cause a bad accident and not be able to cover it from a money standpoint. Does the govt have the right to establish the rules of the road? I think so. It prevents chaos. Along those same lines, It has the right to require the drivers to have insurance. What would happen to you if you got hit and had your car totaled and you got hurt bad and there was no insurance to cover your losses?

Wow, I can't believe I found someone who thinks like me. I agree, the only reason politicians aren't busting the heads of insurance companies is because they know the revenue they can tax. They didn't with the mafia, so of course they had to go. Car insurance is important because you are in a weapon with wheels and accidents do happen. Home insurance is only mandetory only if you have a mortgage. If your home is paid off then no insurance is necessary, but you do run the risk of losing everything in a storm, burgurly, and then there is the all too common somebody getting hurt on your property. The insurance rates in florida are unreal, my premium is coming due in a few months and I am scared to death to see what it is going to be. I am hearing absolute horror stories from people who have never filed a claim in thier lives seeing their premiums double and triple. Not good when most are on fixed incomes. Sorry I wrote too much, but this is a hot topic for me.

Because the government can regulate economic activity.

The states get it as part of their general powers, and Congress can if there would be a cumulative effect on interstate commerce, which pretty much reaches all economic or commercial activity.

So, as long as the government can make any rational claim that the requirement has some legitimate benefit to society, they get to regulate it.

And that includes the recent Massachusetts law requiring all Mass residents to have health insurance.

Well to do anything, you have to be financially responsible. To drive your car on public roads espiecially. You don't have to buy insurance, but you better be wealthy enough to pay for someones hospital stay, funeral, cost of replacing damaged property and so forth, in the event of an accident you caused. If you can't, get ready for lots of jail time.

The government doesn't force anyone to pay for insurance. My employer pays for some of my insurance and I pay the rest but I don't have to have insurance if I don't want it.

The funny part is. We're forced to pay for insurance, and then a hurricane comes along, and suddenly the insurance companies don't want to pay us. So we have to pay to take them to court. And then we have to just keep on paying and paying and paying.

Insurance is like Social Security. Just another dumbass tax that we'll never see any benefit from.

They don't. If you don't want to buy insurance, then don't.
BUT if you want to drive on THEIR highway, then you must abide by their rules.
It isn't fair for other people on the road for you to not have insurance. If you cause an accident, damage, injury etc., you should have insurance to cover the cost. If not, then don't drive. It's that simple.

I don't know, but I agree with you, I don't think it's right, I'm a safe driver, why should I have to have insurance. Further more, if someone wants to go out and buy a brand new car, they should pay for insurance, not me. Write your congressman. But I doubt it will do any good.

Which government are you talking about? You don't have to have insurance in the US...but it's pretty stupid not to.

Oh...I was thinking medical insurance. Auto insurance...in Michigan we have a no fault law...every motorist is required to carry insurance...it's for the injured motorists sake.

Insurance is legalized gambling, except it is not voluntary in many cases. However, the government can do anything that we let them do. If you don't like what they do, you have to vote against the representatives that vote for the law.
