The swamps around a beach produce a tremendous amount of methane that permeates the air in the area. Farts are methane. Not sure if you wanted a real answer, but there it is.
By the way, if you or someone around you are letting 'em rip and they smell as strong as the methane around North and South Carolina's beaches, I strongly recommend that you not be near open flames.
