There was a guy that lived a half-mile from us who had been kept out of jail for child molestation because the judge thought that because he was in college he was a low risk. The judge from the town that came to that conclusion chose to ignore the concerns of the prosecutor who said that the guy had gone to jail for molestation previously. The prejudging of this guy was that he was a college student with good grades. He was also white. He ended up killing a family and sexually molesting and killing the son and was caught with the daughter. My point? True prejudice cuts both ways. The belief that a minority may be guilty of something they didn't do also has the twisted side that a white male may be considered innocent of a crime he did commit. Prejudice as a logical tool? I don't think so.

If I read your question correctly, you are using prejudice in the sense of pre inclination towards something as opposed to it's more prevalent racial overtone meaning. If so, then you are right about it's necessity. People don't even realize that they are using it. What they don't accept is the second meaning I have given. Since the racial thing does tend to colour a lot of thinking, people are right in not accepting it.
You want to make fruit salad and need the apples, they want orange juice and reject the apples.

Well u r right to a certain degree..u can't know everybody's intentions on sight...but u also have to learn to give people the benefit of doubt and don't act on your prejudices..it will backfire on you.
Sometimes you can't help but pre judge a situation...but let things play out before you act.
I had a lady who thought because I was a student that I was very young she treated me as such until she found out differently. It didn't feel good to be on the receiving end and of course she proved herself to be a fool discounting me before she knew my age accurately.

Heuristics are simple, efficient rules of thumb we use when we have incomplete information. Prejudice is making a decision without any information.

Why not ask 'why is prejudgment or prejudice only conceptualized negatively' . Presumption versus fact....or fiction versus fact, or superstition versus fact.
