Since she's such a good friend you should really go but just leave early. She won't be disappointed and you won't feel bad if you didn't go. You can probably think of a good excuse for leaving early...don't feel good, have a date, work the next day...early, etc..

People do things that they don't necessarily enjoy doing for the sake of being a good friend. If you are really that terrified of getting dressed up and eating free food be honest with your friend. Would you want her to lie to you just to spare your feelings? Are you really that close if she doesn't already know how uncomfortable these things make you?

Be honest, tell her crowds give you the willies. If she's very close, she will understand if you decline graciously. If it's appropriate, send a gift and offer to take her and her daughter to a nice lunch. That way, she'll know that you want to celebrate the event and aren't just blowing the whole thing off.

Tell her the straight up truth - that you are a social recluse and feel uncomfortable around people especially if you don't know them or they are doing something you don't understand. They should understand. Or maybe it's time to do those things and develop some skills that are necessary and help out a friend.

If this person is a very close friend, then you should put your own feelings aside and go. Who knows? You could even end up enjoying yourself.

If she is a very close friend, then sometimes we have to grin and bear it.
Just go and stay for only a little while.

You should tell her you have a doctor's appointment and you could come for a little while. So then you go for like 20 min and leave.
