If your computer CAME with Windows 98SE, then it is probably old, and you should NOT upgrade to anything else. Here's why.

- Windows 2000 would be nice, but you would need all new device drivers. It would cost about $100 for Windows 2000, but you should also expand your RAM to 256MB. You should have a 20GB drive for this. Visit http://www.coastmemory.com to see what memory that you need in your system.

- Windows XP would really suck. Yes, you might need new drivers, but most of that would be taken care of. But you would spend at least $150 for the software. Then you should really expand your RAM to 512MB. You should have at least 20GB hard drive, but would be better off with 40GB. That's spending even more money. You minimum screen setting would be 800X600.

Your poor old computer will probably only last 8 years... if you are lucky. SO it is 6 years old now, you would be spending the money and throwing it away in such a short time.

- Consider instead. Go to STAPLES and look for the COMPAQ tower only deal. It lists for $399, which include brand new hardware, plenty of RAM, bigger hard drive. This would include the Windows XP software, so we are talking BARGAIN. This system would be a million times better than your old rig.

If your running WIN 98 SE, you probably don't have the hardware to run a newer operating system. You'll probably end up having to buy a new computer. If you are happy with what you have, don't worry about upgrading. I still have 2 systems running Win 98, and one running Win 95. They do what I need them to do, so no need to update them.

All of the above seem to be accurate, particulary the part about your hardware not being strong enough for XP; however, you might try Linux. The Mephis version is quick and easy to install, the installation program will check to see if your hardware is Ok. I use SimplyMephis, but there is also a MephisLite for systems with less capacity. Easy to install and free. You would have to learn some new terms but again its easy, looks alot like windows and the Mephis.org site has lots of documentation and help files.

Upgrade to Windows XP Home or Professional. You can get the academic version if you qualify for under $90.00. Just pop the install CD in and let it run.
