They do that on purpose. Real telephone numbers do not start with 555. They are only used in movies or tv shows. This way nobody can call those numbers in real life.

The FCC{Federal Communications Commission}regulation body reserved the 555 prefix Movies & T.V in the 1970's, beginning with 555-0100-555-0199. Before the 70's the exchange on fictional shows were Klondike 5 or Klamath 5, as letter exchanges were used, so you'd ask the operator to connect you to KLondike 5 + 1223 or whatever # the show was assigned.
Not all 555 #'s are fictional anymore, as it is now a standard directory assistance # used in USA & Canada.
Some shows actually get real #'s assigned to their show instead of using the standard 555 prefix any other 4 #'s.
An example of this is the two following shows:
Sex in the City got real phone #'s for their show, that will be discontinued at end of show's run.
24{Keifer Sutherland's show} use the actual # of a staff member so when the phone rings you hear a real person answer.(I think a member of the production staff's # is used.)
If you want to read up on this topic go to your Yahoo or Google bar & type in "Why do movies & T.V. shows use 555 as prefix in shows." You'll get a lot of sites come up, but the ones I liked were 555 telephone number-Wikipedia the free encyclopedia & FCC & 555 in shows- go to #3 on Yahoo search results called The Straight Dope: Why do phone #'s in shows start with 555.? these are 2 great sources of info.P.S. The FCC also has a site for answering kids ?'s on this & other ?'s asked by kids about the entainment industry.

Yes, the song Jenny (867-5309) by Tommy Tutone released in 1982. That song started some of this. When ever the song played on New York city radio stations the 867 exchange was shut down for a long time, not to mention the person that had the number. That number is generally not issued by a phone company in the US.

It became a industry standard in radio and TV to use the 555 exchange since it is only used by long directory assistance.

In the real world we have the: "1-800" number, in the cinama world, it's "555". I think you are right on not giving away real numbers, because if they did, and they literally put down someone's phone number, that person would be getting tons of 'fan' calls to see if it works. There are no numbers that start with 555, so it's easy for the cinama to have it, and call that number their own.

The reason for this is that there is no true phone number that begins with 555 (with one exception). If they used real numbers or even possible real numbers that number would be called millions of times.

The one exception is long distance information. 555-1212

It's because home phone numbers never start with 555, and they don't have to worry about getting sued.

555 is not a real prefix. whenever they use anything else, jerks all over the country start dialing that number and harrassing the people on the other end, asking for movie characters and what not. if you dial 555 you get nothing

yes..it's so annoying lol...it's probably cuz no real numbers start with 555, so if someone watching the movie tries to call it, there will be no one to be annoyed by all the rendom phone calls...but who would actually try calling a number they saw in a movie? lol
