One cup is 8 ounces, a half cup would be 4 ounces and so on, so I would assume that 1/4 cup plus half of a 1/4 cup is going to be 2.5 ounces.

Is this a puzzle or a practical question.
If it's practical then when in the world don't you have
access to a 1/4 cup and a tablespoon. The 1/4 cup
is 2 oz. and a tablespoon is .5 oz.
If for some incredible reason in the universe you literally have only a cup then you have to know
that 2.5 oz. 5/16 of a cup. Good luck with that.

Your question is in mathematics, but the use of cups is an American peculiarity in cooking and has nothing to do with mathematics.
Other more sensible people use litres and kilograms and do not have to remember any thing. Is it not time Americans moved with the times?
