You replied the question your self, they're monitors to end spit, and breath from hitting the actually mic that is self. Now the spit is a minor ingredient notwithstanding the respiration isn't and IF the singers breath is able to hit the mic it may degrade the prevalent of the sound the singer is making. there are likely different causes also yet i'm truly certain the above 2 are the important ones....

It's a "pop" screen, it stops the popping sound that occurs when some people say the letter "P" and "B", when you say a "p" you blow out air, when it directly hits the microphone diaphragm it makes a popping sound.

It's called a pop filter, mostly used in studios to keep poping sounds
out like p, t, and wind sounds like s, stuff like that
