Oh, sweetie... This is a nervous time for all us gals. Been going to the same Dr. for 20 yrs! The advice I have for you is you need to be comfortable with your Dr. hands down. Ask questions... trust me, she/he welcomes them. Relax, as it will be over in mere minutes. For me, it never gets better - nerves-wise, but its so fast, and so important to do.

This Dr. is YOUR Dr. - Ask anything and tell them if you're uncomfy. They've seen a bazillion women... Trust me as a major worrier with this, you'll be in and out before you know it - and you're so much better for it. (hugs) ... sucks but it's so worth it.

The best thing to do is to try and think of something pleasant while you are getting the examination. Also, be prepared for an uncomfortable feeling when the doctor inserts the speculum into your vagina. Sometimes they open the speculum too far and it can be very uncomfortable. If this happens, tell the doctor that they have opened the speculum to far. Also, just as a warning, I had a preverted male doctor once, I was really uncomfortable with him. This caused me not to get another check-up for 5 years. Don't ever skip your check-ups. Regular check-ups is the only way to detect cancer in that area.

Good luck :) First visit can be scary - I would definitely suggest making sure your gyne KNOWS it's your first visit, so they explain everything to you, go slowly, etc. Ask all the questions you want, especially about the physical exam.

Use imagery. Go to the beach in your mind or your favorite most comfortable place.
